Super Bowl Lessons
Good morning.
I’m pretty pumped up this week and excited to be writing to you.
Why?
Because of the emails I have received back from you since I have been writing. After Tuesdays email on What’s At Rock Bottom and my post my dog Heinz I received a email from Ludy saying
“I am sorry about your dog,Heinz. I have been reading your emails and they are very good. I really enjoy them. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work!”
I got to tell you that helped me a lot.
A few weeks ago in my first post I wrote about why I started writing this log. But you never know if you are making an impact unless others tell you so.
Sometimes in life you are just looking for a win; no matter how big or small. Thank you Ludy for this win. 🙂
Speaking of wins. Recently I have been following a series on Facebook about Tom Brady called Tom VS Time. No I’m not a fan but I am a fan of what this guy is about. I just most recently watched the last video that came out about the loss of the Super Bowl and how things went down.
Tom has a few kids now that are about 6 to 9 and they were upset about the loss this time around. They were old enough now to feel the emotion of their dad loosing and were crying. So he had a talk with them and said “we don’t always win. We try our best and sometimes it doesn’t always go the way you want.”
If you were to look at Tom’s carrier you might say that he probably has this saying tattooed somewhere on his body. After all this guy has made it to 8 Super Bowls and won 5. He hasn’t always won but he certainly has tried his best.
When Tom does loose he goes straight back to the drawing board to figure out how to make it better.
This is the story of everyone’s life.
We have some victories and we have some losses but it’s what we do after the losses and victory’s that matter most.
It reminded my a similar situation in the past with a client where I gave it my best but lost.
You I know I’m supposed to talk about how I always win. But life doesn’t work that way.
I’ve talked about in the past how I used to follow the tactics of So Called Guru’s of the industry on how to get people’s business and how it drove me NUTS! But at the time it was the only way I was doing things.
Well anyway I met with this potential client first and went through the GURU motions of how I could help them sell their home. Things went really well and Henry said I was his guy at the end but it would be a few months before the house would go on the market.
So I kept in contact for a few months and then met back up with him. After talking for a litte while he told me he interviewed with 5 other realtors.
WOW! Right?
We then talked some more and he said he would let me know what he had decided. In the end he chose another realtor.
I was pretty frustrated. Not so much because I lost the deal but because Henry didn’t really know who I was or what I was about. All he knew was that I was some “Sales Guy” that was going to sell his home and take some money out of his pocket.
I got to tell you that really eats at me. Because I’ve never have thought of myself that way. I’ve always treated my clients as my friends and family and when you sit down with someone and they dont’ see that; well that is very frustrating.
But you know I had a choice. I could pout or pick myself up and go back to the drawing board. This was one of the events that drove me to co author my book The Value Driven Approach To Sell Real Estate.
Once I got my books printed I went by Henry’s house and dropped off the book. About a week later I got a call from Henry. He said “Man I love your book. Everything you said was spot on. I wish you had done this before.”
I told him that I had learned a lot from our meeting and that it really made me think about how the way I was doing business with people.
Our meeting really changed how I do things today.
In the end we don’t always win. We try our best and sometimes it doesn’t work out and that’s ok. Learn from your losses, regroup, unshackle your chains, formulate a new plan and make a run to your own Super Bowl again.
If you like what you read then please write back. Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
