How Dare You Say That

This morning I read an article on leadership about a former employee at Google Kim Scott.

In her first major leadership role. Kim presented some results from a campaign with her boss Sheryl Sandberg that her team developed.

The meeting was a smash and Kim walked out with a new set of confidence.

On the way back to her office, her boss praised her for the presentation. She also revealed to her that she had more than a few “umms” while presenting. Blowing it off Kim continued to walk to her office.

That’s when Sheryl stopped her. Looked her in the eye saying “Kim, when you say‘ummm’ every third word, it makes you sound insecure and stupid.

Nothing like a slap to the face. Right?

It all just depends on how you look at it though.

Her boss wasn’t saying she was stupid. She was saying it made her sound that way and undermined her skills and abilities.

Kim took that constructive advice and took things to the next level.

She now speaks on stages across the world and is the author of a bestselling book Radical Candor – The Surprising Secret To Being a Good Boss.

Ohhhh and she went on to become the CEO of Facebook as well.

Most people don’t like criticism for many reasons. But it exists so we can get better at what we do.

It is something that I’m always looking to do as well. I write about lot of successes that I have with my partners and clients.

But like Kim. In those successes are some things that need brushing up on. It’s nothing personal.

It’s things that need to be cleaned up. But I don’t know if they need to be cleaned up if nobody tells me.

So I need your help.

If you see something like Kim’s boss Sheryl. Feel free to point it out.

I know Im not the best writer. I know Im not the best speaker. But I want to improve. I want to serve my partners better.

After all, that’s why I began writing. To help myself and others.

learned long ago that people can make a positive impact on people‘s lives.

hope you can make one on mine as well.

Feel free to comment anytime. I look forward to your feedback.

Thanks for your time. Unshackle your chains, my friends.
