Is is really better?
I love history. I love watching shows about discovering the past. Especially when it leads to ways that are far superior to a method, we use today.
I was watching a show about the Aztecs civilization before it’s fall. The thought that these cities in the jungle could only support thousands of people.
Mainly because the soil wouldn’t support a large population.
They are discovering now that some of these cities supported hundreds of thousands of people.
But how?
They have found that they created their own soil. About ten feet underground lays some of the most nutrient rich soil that has ever been found.
But here is the kicker. Scientist can’t even figure out how it was made. They can’t even replicate the results.
The art was lost in time.
Sure we have things we have designed ourselves now with science. But does it hold a candle to how things are made in the natural using the resources that were designed for it?
This parallels with a book that I’m also reading on Crossfit. Where they talk about the evolution of how we workout was designed for comfort. Not for physical fitness.
The body doesn’t operate in a mechanical motion. It doesn’t isolate muscles when being used. That’s why you can be “fit” and when you do yard work you become sore the next day. Those are real movements.
Not ones designed by a machine.
After watching and reading things like this I’m starting to look at things in life a little differently. I find myself thinking “Is this really better or does it make things easier?”
And if so “what am I losing by using it?” “What am I giving up?”
It’s really a different way of looking at things. But the more I do it the more I see that the things that make our life better can actually set us back.
Technology is real estate has done this.
Sure it’s nice to be able to text, send an email or even a video. But it doesn’t give us that human connection that people had years ago.
It actually allows us to disconnect from people. Leaving a void.
Kinda like the Tin Man. Without a heart, he was lost.
I’ve been known to stop by and say hi to my partners before. It’s a part of my Value-Driven Approach to doing things.
But sometimes in the back of my head I think “will they think it’s weird?” It’s easy to think that.
But when you look at how we are really designed.
I know that using the personal touch is much better.
It’s better than a text anytime.
Have a great week.
